  • Gaining Clarity In Our Lives

    Gaining Clarity In Our Lives

Clarity is such a nice word, but how to we go about gaining clarity in our lives?  You can conjure up images of pristine cool clear lakes, blue skies and everything crisp and beautiful. But a lack of clarity brings images of stumbling along in the dark, tripping over debris and sliding in the mud. Mental clarity is much the same: a clear tranquil mind or a muddled, messy one. Without clarity we forget where we put our keys, we forget people’s names, we forget appointments, not only that but we find it hard to focus on tasks. Our mind seems to go around in circles, and we are mentally and physically exhausted.

Mental clarity is a wonderful tool which helps us to function easily and get tasks done well and on time. For most of us who need a bit more clarity the fix is simple…. we need to get a handle on our stress levels, to exercise and to breathe deeper. The absolutely great news is that Wellness Haven Yoga classes incoporates practices that address all these strategies to help our minds to become a bit more cool, calm and clear.

    Stress and Lack of Clarity

The great offender from stress is cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced in adrenal glands which in fact is not only an offender but also a friend. Cortisol is released on a regular basis throughout the day to keep our energy levels up, to regulate blood pressure and keep inflammation at bay. A surge in cortisol is what helps us get up in the morning and helps us deal with stressful situations. And there lies the problem.

Unfortunately, many of us experience stressful situations on a daily basis and according to medical opinions the resulting near-constant cortisol release can damage the memory center of the brain. In cases of moderate-to-high chronic stress, we lose our ability to concentrate, and recalling memories or laying down new ones becomes more difficult. Additionally to make matters worse, the receptors in the brain become less adept at regulating cortisol as we age.

So what can we do? While we can’t stop the aging process, we can address our reactions to stress in a multi-pronged approach.

Yoga Asanas to Lower Stress Levels

Yoga asanas performed mindfully help to bring us into the present moment. They help to increase our ability to focus and help us in gaining clarity in our lives and to relax our brain. This mindfulness during our asanas is enhanced by a soft and focused yoga breath which brings us into the present moment and also helps to relax our nervous system.

Staying for a while in challenging poses develops our fortitude. Fortitude is the ability to keep holding the pose even though our mind is telling us to come out of it.  This fortitude is said the spill out into our everyday life and help us withstand the onslaught of stress.  The fortitude muscle is said to grow with yoga asanas and enable us to meet stresses in our daily life with strength, calmness and  self determination.

    Meditation to Lower Stress Levels

Many studies strongly endorse the soothing effects of a yoga meditation practice.  Even as little as 10 minutes of meditation a day can have a profound affect on stress levels. During meditation the brain produces alpha and theta brainwaves which are associated with deep relaxation. This state of deep rest promotes the production of feel good chemicals like endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. The more we meditate the more the harmful effect of stress will dissipate, our thinking patterns will become clearer and we will see ways to avoid stress. Meditation is a wonderful tool to help us cope with stress, calming the nervous system and bringing clarity to our lives.

  • San Ramon Yoga Sunday Workshop

    San Ramon Yoga Sunday Workshop

Wellness Haven approach to yoga has progressed in many different ways over the years since we started. Over the course of the years, we have learned many different tools and techniques to reach the optimal yoga asana suitable to our body structure.

Have you discovered that during yoga asanas you feel more tightness in some muscles than others leading to difficulty in stretching enough to complete an asana?

    You are not alone!

Each one of us have varied amount of tightness in each of the muscles, some more than another. Whether it is tightness in the neck and shoulder muscles, or the various muscles on the back or the arms and the legs, unless released, it endangers the quality of our lives. We need to spend sufficient time in stretching those muscles through various techniques that eventually enable a yoga asana to completion and fulfillment. Wellness Haven Sunday Yoga Workshops  are exactly meant for this purpose. We target different muscle groups and work on releasing them through various stretching techniques using different tools.
For example the month of July is especially targeted to tight hamstrings and we have been using kinesiological stretching approach to target the muscles in the hamstrings. We are also using straps and tennis balls to ease and release.

At Wellness Haven we are always questioning, “How else can we open our muscles to reach the optimal position in any asana?”  It is not enough to somehow just do an asana! It is beneficial only if you are constantly monitoring your progress for we absolutely progress as we target the various muscle groups. At Wellness Haven we believe that we need an all encompassing practice as we progress in our yoga health journey – from stretching slowly to ease the muscle tightness and increase blood circulation on Sundays to calorie burning exercises on Saturdays, to relaxing and releasing and working out various parts of our bodies on weekdays.

If you are someone who believes in a complete body progress so that you can actually see and feel the results, do not procrastinate,. Reach out to us: (925)819-6327

  • Time Crunch And Vacation Yoga

    Time Crunch And Vacation Yoga

Many of us are heard saying, “I am so tight!” Even yogins who practice regularly feel tight if they take a long break.
Living a life includes  a variety of colors through many different events and circumstances. We work hard. We have family to take care of, we run around and a common complaint always is, “I don’t have time!” But if we want to stay healthy for years to come so that we can take care of our loved ones and including ourselves, we have to stretch, strengthen and balance every day, even on days we feel we do not have more than 5 minutes to ourselves!

There is always 10 minutes that one can spend on one self. If that is not the case, it is time to re-look at our lives! if you are someone who is unable to find 10 minutes during the day, then wake up 10 minutes early or sleep 10 minutes later. Assess you daily schedule, and see what burns away your time that can be cut out to make room for 10 healthy minutes for yourself.

A lot of health can happen in 10 minutes. Let’s see what can we do to keep our limbs moving, to keep them strong, supple and flexible when we only have 10 minutes at a time or even less.

Combine yogic stretches with deep breathing and meditation and you have hit the jackpot!

  • Yoga And Weight Management

    Yoga And Weight Management

    Yoga And Weight Management

Whoever has heard of yoga is also very well aware of its mental benefits. It is very well recognized as a stress-releaser, and its calming effects. It is also widely known for its ability to increase flexibility, balance and stamina through the beautiful yoga asanas, but only the regularly practicing yogins are aware of its ability as a strengthening exercise and even less are aware of its ability as a cardiovascular and  weight management tool.

Many people who are involved in other form of sports like running, martial arts, and those who love different forms of dancing like ballet, or Indian dances and including Bollywood style dancing, as well as gym visitors have realized that none of these activities are complete on their own. They get strengthening and stamina building through these but they remain very tight in their bodies due to stiff muscles.

Yoga on the other hand, when fully experienced, is complete on its own for its benefits are mental, emotional, spiritual as well as physical. It increases flexibility and balance as well as provides strengthening and cardiovascular benefits and is an effective weight management tool.

What do we mean by “fully experienced?”

Those who are beginners in yoga practice or have never exercised before other than some walking have to start with gentler yoga exercises. This means that even though they are working towards all aspects of the yoga benefits – stress releasing, calming, balancing, flexibility enhancing and strength building – they may not experience the full range of cardiovascular benefits for it takes a seasoned yogin to experience yoga in its full glory through asanas that need to be worked on and practiced daily with focus on alignment and form. Once the basics are understood and students have built stamina to practice more energetic asanas that work up the heart rate, like the Sun Salutation Sequence, as well as the weight bearing asanas like the Arm Balances, the Pigeon Sequence or the Warrior Sequence and such, yogins start experiencing the cardiovascular benefits of yoga at a level that becomes very effective in re-shaping the body through toning, as well as calorie and fat burning. This when combined with yogic props make yoga the only exercise that is complete on its own.

As with anything else in life effectiveness comes with time, practice and patience.

Start with Gentle Yoga and gradually build up to the full form of yoga and experience health benefits like never before.

Gentle Yoga is a modified version of yoga to suit people with different physical abilities and is very effective with those with physical limitations, including those with physical disability, senior citizens who have not done yoga before or those who have never exercised. This is because Gentle Yoga uses props like the chair for back support, which is not used in regular flow yoga classes. The wall provides the stability and balance for standing poses. Students from this class walk with better posture, better stability and balance and with greater confidence. It benefits those with physical issues like osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, back and neck pain, and sciatica. It is effective in lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride to optimal levels.

Energetic Yoga is the more strenuous version of yoga simply because we do many flow sequences away from the chair and the wall. Studies have shown similar fitness results for blood pressure and heart rate  for those practicing yoga versus aerobic exercises – average blood pressure for practicing yogins was 108/65 compared to 115/71 for those doing aerobic exercises, and the heart rate for practicing yogins  averaged 63 beats per minute, compared to versus 60 beats per minute for those doing aerobic exercises. But flexibility benefits are only realized through yoga stretches.

No matter which type of exercise you like and which type of sports you love, supplement it with yoga asanas in its full glory and reap health benefits that keep you rejuvenated in both mind and body.
