    Gaining Clarity In Our Lives

    Clarity is such a nice word, but how to we go about gaining clarity in our lives?  You can conjure up images of pristine cool clear lakes, blue skies and everything crisp and beautiful. But a lack of clarity brings images of stumbling along in the dark, tripping over debris and sliding in the mud. Mental clarity is much the same: a clear tranquil mind or a muddled, messy one. Without clarity we forget where we put our keys, we forget people’s names, we forget appointments, not only that but we find it hard to focus on tasks. Our mind seems to go around in circles, and we are mentally and physically exhausted.

    Mental clarity is a wonderful tool which helps us to function easily and get tasks done well and on time. For most of us who need a bit more clarity the fix is simple…. we need to get a handle on our stress levels, to exercise and to breathe deeper. The absolutely great news is that Wellness Haven Yoga classes incoporates practices that address all these strategies to help our minds to become a bit more cool, calm and clear.

    Stress and Lack of Clarity

    The great offender from stress is cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced in adrenal glands which in fact is not only an offender but also a friend. Cortisol is released on a regular basis throughout the day to keep our energy levels up, to regulate blood pressure and keep inflammation at bay. A surge in cortisol is what helps us get up in the morning and helps us deal with stressful situations. And there lies the problem.

    Unfortunately, many of us experience stressful situations on a daily basis and according to medical opinions the resulting near-constant cortisol release can damage the memory center of the brain. In cases of moderate-to-high chronic stress, we lose our ability to concentrate, and recalling memories or laying down new ones becomes more difficult. Additionally to make matters worse, the receptors in the brain become less adept at regulating cortisol as we age.

    So what can we do? While we can’t stop the aging process, we can address our reactions to stress in a multi-pronged approach.

    Yoga Asanas to Lower Stress Levels

    Yoga asanas performed mindfully help to bring us into the present moment. They help to increase our ability to focus and help us in gaining clarity in our lives and to relax our brain. This mindfulness during our asanas is enhanced by a soft and focused yoga breath which brings us into the present moment and also helps to relax our nervous system.

    Staying for a while in challenging poses develops our fortitude. Fortitude is the ability to keep holding the pose even though our mind is telling us to come out of it.  This fortitude is said the spill out into our everyday life and help us withstand the onslaught of stress.  The fortitude muscle is said to grow with yoga asanas and enable us to meet stresses in our daily life with strength, calmness and  self determination.

    Meditation to Lower Stress Levels

    Many studies strongly endorse the soothing effects of a yoga meditation practice.  Even as little as 10 minutes of meditation a day can have a profound affect on stress levels. During meditation the brain produces alpha and theta brainwaves which are associated with deep relaxation. This state of deep rest promotes the production of feel good chemicals like endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. The more we meditate the more the harmful effect of stress will dissipate, our thinking patterns will become clearer and we will see ways to avoid stress. Meditation is a wonderful tool to help us cope with stress, calming the nervous system and bringing clarity to our lives.

    Yes! It is very important that we heal the body inside out first if you are facing physical issues. Yoga can be added on later even though the program is purchased together to take advantage of the heavily discounted fee. All 3 parts of the program can be done separately if so desired.

    For all those who are physically fit or those who do not have the time constraints, we recommend that they do all 3 aspects of the program together to maximize their benefits.

    Will I starve during this program?

    We guide each individual to suit the way they want to do this program. No starvation is required. We start our program with relaxing of your internal system through all natural means and holistic methods, keeping your own food choices, but healthier.

    Can I go aggressively in this program, still maintaining it in a wholesome manner?

    Absolutely, for we work according to your needs making sure that the approach is healthy and wholesome.

    Can I take it easy in this program, for I want to take it slow as my goal is not weight loss but to become a healthy eater?

    Will you give us a diet chart?

    Can you give us some details around the kind of diet you suggest?

    Will you sell food products to us?

    No! We do not sell you any food. We do not provide any smoothies or shakes or pre-packaged meals! This program is to build healthy eating habits right out of your own home kitchen as well as healthy food choices when you are dining out. We believe in educating you so that you never have to rely on others providing you smoothies and shakes or pre-packaged food.

    Will I be able to complete this program successfully?

    As we work with each individual, based on their own individual needs, we continue inspiring, motivating and educating you until you reach your goals, whether it is within 12 weeks or even after.

    I live out of state/out of country. How will this program work for me?

    This program is tailored to suit individual needs whether local, out of state or out of country.

    Our methods of communication are Whatsapp, Skype, phone calls, with complete Nutrition
    guidance throughout the 12 weeks through calls and Whatsapp; and once a week guidance on exercise, breathing and meditation through Skype or video calls.

    Conscious Living

    From where you are to where you want to be is a journey of conscious steps that anyone can accomplish provided there is clarity about what one wants and clarity about the action steps. As you consciously take these action steps to improve the quality of your life, you also come closer to achieving what you desire. This is conscious living.

    A. Acknowledge where you are.

    This is the first step in your journey towards where you want to be. If there is no acknowledgement of where you are, how can you possibly know which action steps you need to start with? Write down everything that you know about you that keep you unsatisfied and wanting and everything about you that prevents you from achieving your desires and goals.

    B. Boldly state where you want to be, your desires and goals.

    The second step is to know your destination, the point you want to be at, for unless there is clarity about where you want to be how will you plan the action steps that need to be taken to get you there?

    C. Start making small consistent changes in your lifestyle.

    It is very important to know that if you do not ‘clean’ your life first, the ability to achieve your dreams will remain hidden to you! See below a list of actions that help you ‘clean’ your life.

    1. Nourish yourself with ‘me’ time everyday.
      Wake up early, before the rest of the family members wake up, giving you the much needed extra hour without any distraction and to put energy and excitement in you for the day ahead. This is when you might go through some simple stretching, breathing and meditation exercises. You would have sufficient time to go through your list of things needed for the day, that you created the evening before, so that it goes smoothly. This will help you plan head and prepare before the rest of the house awakes.
    1. Plan and pack your meals for the day.
      Packing healthy, wholesome and nutritious meals, that you planned the evening before, for the day ahead will keep you energized as you stay away from fatty, sugary, starchy foods that are depleted of nutritional value and packed with toxins.
    1. Exercise to keep your body and mind limber.
      Yogic stretching, strengthening and balancing exercises, or whichever kind your body likes are very much needed to keep you limber and strong in both the mind and the body so that you can make clear decisions and physical aches and pains do not distract you from achieving what you have set out for.
    1. De-clutter your space for a clutter free mind.
      Make it a habit to throw away the not-needed papers that come into your mailbox as soon as you go through them. Pen the mail and go through them right away throwing what is not of any use and filing what is needed in the right space. Give away clothes and books and anything that you do not need keeping your space congestion free. Make your space free of dust and grime. Keeping your space free of everything that you do not need and clean will enable you to think with clarity.
    1. Clean out your To Do List Daily.
      Make sure that your To Do list is kept updated with all that you need and want to do. Whether it is paying bills, or going to the grocery store, the bank, the dentist, or the dry cleaners or a visit to your friend, take action daily and cross off your list. Keep yourself free of disappointments, frustrations, guilt and regrets by being disciplined about your daily tasks.
    1. Eradicate negativity and negative people from your life.
      Some people never want to upgrade their life and stay deep into negative behavior and actions. Clean your life of such people if you do not want to drown yourself into it as well.  Your life will not change if you do not change the circumstances and events around your life that are in your control.

    D. Formulate the action steps towards your dreams/desires and goals.
    Once your life is de-cluttered in every possible way, ideas start taking shape and life starts coming on the right track. Your path to your dreams becomes clear and you now start your steps towards achieving your dream.

    1. Plan your life keeping yourself flexible about impending changes.
      Create a master plan/action steps for your life goals, knowing that there will be changes and detours due to unknown factors.  Have all those things in the master plan that you dream of no matter how impossible they seem.
      Then each evening, sit down to plan your next day. Keeping in mind your master plan, and with the intention of checking off list items in the upcoming day ahead. This will keep you creative and productive and energetic and help you steer consistently in the right direction.
    1. Plan your free time, fun time, goofy time, getting out of your comfort time.
      It is imperative to have fun as you continue living with discipline and consistency.
      Plan to get out of your comfort zone by doing something that does not come to you easily or seems impossible.  If something does not work, change the direction of your thinking and do it in a different way.
    1. Plan a no-action, silent time.
      Never forget to take time out to do nothing, to simply be in silence for these are the times when new ideas come to fruition taking you closer to your dreams and goals.
    1. Re-look and re-plan your master plan.
      Your life master plan is but a plan. It can change. Keep an eye on it and steer it in the right direction for you are the captain of your own ship. Take your ship where your planned destination is.

    Losing excess body fat weight is quite an art and a skill that all those who carry extra weight, should learn to lead a healthier life. At Wellness Haven, our focus is on a healthy lifestyle that supports weight loss very effectively and in a wholesome manner, rather than quick and temporary weight loss gimmicks that seem to be so prevalent in the world today.     What is Body Fat?

    Fat is one of the essential components of the body. Body is made up of muscle, bones, fat and organs like the brain, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines, all of which are necessary for healthy functioning of the body. In 1 pound of fat there is approximately 3,500 calories of stored energy.

    Fat is of 2 types:
    1. Essential Body Fat: It is necessary for body functions and is stored in small amounts in bone marrow, muscles, central nervous system and organs. Essential body fat in men is approximately 3% and in women it is approximately 12 % due to differences in body functions.
    2. Storage Body Fat: It is the fat that accumulates under the skin, around organs and in the muscles and this fat is necessary for the protection of the internal organs from injuries. This storage fat remains approximately the same in both men and women. But when this fat gets stored in excess, it becomes unhealthy and a person is considered overweight.

    What is Body Fat Range?

    Body fat can range from healthy to unhealthy on both sides of the spectrum. Too low or too high are equally unhealthy to maintain normal body functions.  Healthy fat range is depicted in the image on this page. Many women become overwhelmed with home and work responsibilities and let go of their body and become unhealthy

    How do we lose excess body fat to gain health? 

    Losing excess body fat weight is very simple. But patience is needed as is the case with anything worthy.

    • Cleanse your body regularly: Detoxing the body of the built up toxins is very much needed.
    • Eat clean: Keeping away from sugar, processed food, fatty food, and foods that create bloating or inflammation in the body.
    • Exercise: Staying flexible, strong, and balanced through yoga and supplementing it with other exercises is essential for a healthy body.
    • Remain hydrated: Keeping the body well hydrated keeps the body away from many physical ailments.
    • Sleep well: Good, quality sleep every night is essential for a healthy body.

  • I Hurt All Over!

    I Hurt All Over!

    “Every bone in my body hurts! I am hardly sleeping at night. Please take me to the doctor!”  This used to be my thought every night in 2006 until I actually took action to do something about it. Wellness Haven Yoga in San Ramon has been created with love and compassion in the heart for women who have been in similar shoes as mine, and especially women around 35 and above who need to be nurtured. It was created as a result of my own experience with chaos in my life.

    These were the very words I had said to my mom, when I visited her in India in June of 2006. I had gone through very stressful life events, and I was in chaos both mentally and physically. My mother had been waiting for me to say these words to her so that she could take me to the family physician. One look at me and he diagnosed the mental stress I was under and prescribed medication for full 1 year at least! I vowed to get better as quickly as I possibly could. I was completely aware that unless I changed my mental state, the physical state would not change.

    I was surrounded by chaos in my life that had started manifesting itself in many physical ailments: …and all because I was under so much stress that the internal system had become overloaded and had no other choice but to start showing up as physical conditions!

    Physical symptoms I faced

    • blood pressure had been on the rise
    • sugar level had become border line
    • arthritic conditions had limited my right side
    • my lower right back was permanently painful
    • my shoulders and neck were knotted in stress
    • cholesterol and triglycerides were on the rise
    • I was facing allergies

    Intense desire to change

    Circumstances enveloping me at the time were chaotic, but determination to extricate myself from this chaos was stronger. I had been religiously taking medication for about 6 months, by the end of which time the root of the chaos in my life had come to an end due to major action steps. On January 1st 2007, I had an epiphany and I decided with a laser focused intention to start taking many important action steps to become mentally stronger.

    The road to recovery was intense

    The moment this decision to get better was made, the Universe started embracing me with its magical hands and door after door started opening. It was neither easy nor quick. Tremendous patience was required, and I had made a conscious decision to be patient. It took me from summer of 2006 to start of 2007 to come to decisions and become self empowered. In October 2008, I published my book – A Journey of Self Revelation under my pen name, Joy. It took me another year, to the end of 2009 to get to the state I had been craving for – to be mentally and physically fit. It took me yet another year, to the end of 2010, to become free of allergies.
    In 2011, I reformed my eating habits! I was a woman on a mission for mental and physical health.

    How following the 8 limbs of yoga changed my life

    • As a first step, I got rid of the medicine I had been on. (I never looked back; never needed it again.)
    • I started listening to and reading books on self empowerment and self growth. (This became a habit never to be broken.)
    • I discovered my personal development coach and started eradicating my mental barriers. (He is still my coach and in time with experience, I became a coach myself.)
    • I enrolled in breathing and meditation program – a very important limb of yoga (I still follow these exercises religiously and became a teacher in time.)
    • I started yoga asanas to build my muscles, flexibility and balance. (I became an instructor of yoga, opened up my own yoga studio and continue to impact lives.)
    • I started eating right – yet another aspect of yoga. (I learned life impacting concepts, experienced the difference in myself and my family and started Wellness Haven Nutrition Program.)

    The more I took care of myself, the more joyful I became, and slowly but surely the ailments that had surrounded me started leaving me for good. Those who meet me cannot tell that I have suffered from so many physical conditions once. I manage my arthritic side very well with daily yoga and stay physically fit. Mentally I stay calm and in the moment feeling joy within and spilling it in the world around me with a daily meditation practice. I stay nutritionally fit through aware eating.

    I have come a long way. My experiences have taught me so much that I could not possibly have gained through books. My coach encouraged me to teach it to others – how to thrive physically and mentally. I overcame my own mental barriers and in time created my own Wellness Haven in San Ramon as “Wellness Haven Yoga” and am forever grateful for this opportunity.
