  • Myth Around Multitasking

    Myth Around Multitasking

    Myth Around Multitasking

The subject of multitasking came about this morning in our Yoga Teacher Training Session and it urged me to write about my own personal learning and experience with multitasking.

Human Multitasking is derived from “Computer Multitasking” where the processes are actually done in an entirely different manner than the human world. Either the tasks are done through time sharing and rotations where only one task is done at any given point in time in the case of single core microprocessors or tasks are done simultaneously in multi-core computers.

When it comes to the human brain though, although the human brain can perform perceptual and motor functions effectively at the same time with training, it is extremely difficult to learn new information effectively while the brain is involved in performing another task. This is because the brain cannot effectively switch from start to finish of one task with another like the computer. How effective multitasking will be,  depends on the tasks being performed at the same time.

We live in the modern world, where everyone is in a hurry. There is a lack of patience. We want to “save” time, and yet in reality we end up wasting time!

Here is a example from my own experience:
During my work in the corporate world, I was constantly in phone meetings. This did not mean that my own work load was any less, which also meant that there was constant juggling of tasks involved in any given work day. As many can relate to this, I was often “performing” my own tasks on the computer while attending the meetings where I was also actively participating! Looking back I can say that I was not 100% focused on the meeting or the task at hand. The result was time wasted in resolving errors as well as important information that I did not catch during the meeting!

Another example on the home front is when I put something on the stove for cooking and decided to split time doing laundry, or talking on the phone or something else! The result was either burned food or burned skin!!

The conclusion is that we should plan to multi-task in such a way that precious time does not get wasted in the hurry of accomplishing 2 tasks at the same time with error in both tasks!

For example, if we do want to cook and laundry at the same time, it can be accomplished through proper sequencing of tasks. We can put clothes in the washing machine, which when completed will shut down when the cycle is complete on its own, and immediately proceed to cooking. If we know that the cooking is at a low temperature for at least 10 minutes, then we can proceed to transfer the clothes to the dryer and go back to cooking! This simply means an effective sequencing is required.

In this modern world we take pride in saying that we are multi-tasking kings and queens, when in reality we have wasted more precious time than not. Think carefully about which tasks you are about to do “multi-task” and proceed with caution.

  • Manage Your Stress Effectively

    Manage Your Stress Effectively

Manage Your Stress Effectively – Reclaim Your Happiness

You are under stress if you are not in your naturally joyful state of being.

There are many underlying factors causing stress in ones life, but every factor is a result of the 3 critical factors mentioned below:

    • Relationship: You are in an uncomfortable relationship with a significant other or a family member or a friend or with someone related to your work. Yoiu want to be in control of the situation but you are not. This is damaging to your emotional health.
    • Money: Your finances are keeping you worried. You are living from paycheck to paycheck.
    • Health: You are not in a healthy state of being. You have physical health related issues. You are unable to manage your Eating Habits.

If you are under duress due to any one of the above, you are STRESSED!

So how do you keep your stress under control?

I manage mine very effectively. Here is My Story – Utter Chaos To Joyful Health

    In general people think:
-if they ignore or avoid the stress factor, they will be able to manage their stress – ignoring or avoiding never helps. We need to face our situation boldly and manage the stress factor with result based action steps.
    – if they exercise, they will be able to manage their stress – exercise always helps by producing happy hormones in the body but is temporary for as long as you exercise you are good; you leave it and you are back to square one! So Exercise daily!
    – if they sit and meditate, they will be able to manage their stress – it relaxes and calms the mind but is temporary for it lasts as long as you have calmed your thoughts! So Meditate daily!

Effective stress management is a skill and an art that is learned through AWARENESS – which comes through education of the mind; through exercises like meditation, breathing techniques and visualization which are simply tools to develop awareness of your authentic Self so that there can be a change in attitude and perceptions, a change in ones belief system, that is transformation in the way you think and act!  With changed perceptions and better habits, every aspect of your life improves: relationships, finances, and health.

Such education is even more important than the academics through school and college. It comes with learning life skills – proper learning of life changing tools, with practice, with patience, but when learned you are able to manage your stress in such a way that joy surfaces at all times no matter what is going on in your life!

At Wellness Haven, we are passionate about teaching such tools so that you can better every aspect of your life, so that you can live the life you were meant to live, so that you can feel the joy surging like a fountain from deep within, so that external factors do not keep you bound to struggle and misery. Such powerful tools and techniques that change the very way you think are called Life Coaching Tools and that is what a Life Coach like me teaches you through getting you jump-started on the right track and then holding your hand for a complete one year or as long as you desire to be supported.

We get you started with an initial 4 hour program, Reclaim Your Happiness, which begins your life impacting journey!

  • Special Self Care Ritual

    Special Self Care Ritual

    Special Self Care Ritual

Rituals are mindful, creative set of action steps with a purpose that provide us with meaning in our lives by driving our focused attention to a set of actions that are mentally, emotionally and physically satisfying and produce beneficial results. Due to complete clarity in every step of the ritual, it has tremendous impact on our psyche, behavior patterns and our thought process. It provides us with a sense being connected to the world round us, a sense of belonging and as a result provides security, comfort and warmth. It empowers us to connect with our Higher Self. It is a celebration of life itself for it allows us to see beauty and harmony all around us.

Here is one such special self care nightly ritual that provides us with not only comfort but restful sleep.

After taking care of the activities for the day, take a few minutes of your time for yourself, just for you. Make a little ‘nurturing basket’ for yourself with a soft towel, your favorite lotion or oil, your favorite soft socks.

Before going to bed dip your feet in a warm bucket of water and let them soak for just a minute or two. Rinse them clean. In the process your hands are also soaked. Wipe them lovingly with your soft towel. Then spend another minute or two massaging the soles of your feet and your hands with your favorite lotion or oil going in and out though the spaces in between the toes, and the fingers.  Don your soft socks.

Take yourself to bed and indulge in a loving rinsing gentle yogic twist of the body to release all the tensions.

Close your eyes and indulge in a silent prayer in gratitude. With a smile allow yourself to be taken to the land of dreams…

This special nightly ritual will go a long way towards a calmer and stress free life.

  • Success Comes From Planning Ahead

    Success Comes From Planning Ahead

    Success Comes From Planning Ahead

To achieve whatever we truly want from the very core of our being, it is important that we plan our work and then work our plan.

2015 is 3 weeks away! As always I am very aware and am busy planning and working.

A very simple but critical tool towards this critical goal:
Take a pencil and paper and write down,

    1. What do I want to achieve in 2015, big or small?
    2. Why do I want it?
    3. What is the urgency?
    4. What will I not have if I do not achieve it?
    5. What are the consequences of my not planning and working on my plan?
    6. Have I budgeted my income towards my goals?

As always, my number one priority is my Health. I have budgeted my income towards my weekly health care. A big chunk of my income always goes towards my health care – physical (yoga, massage and chiropractic care) and mental (mentoring by my coach).

My other priority is Wellness Haven and making it the best Health Care place there is – safe, loving, peaceful and a family like environment. I am busy planning classes and actions I need to take for its improvement, for I am always thinking of ways to make it even more health impacting than ever before! A number of achievements were made all through 2014 and I am ready for 2015!

In order to be on track with all my plans, I needed to first de-clutter my present physical and mental space as much as possible. I am progressing very well and am focused on starting 2015 with a bang!

How about you? Do you have a budgeted plan for your health? Have you planned your action steps? How about other goals?

Before procrastination sets in, take ACTION!
Yes it is difficult to get things done the way it should and timely, BUT it is so much more difficult to get back on track AFTER you have been off track!

Do not let go of your health track, for it is easy to let go and very difficult to get back.

At Wellness Haven, we are on the health track together with the very best care – YOGA!

  • Too Busy For Yoga?

    Too Busy For Yoga?

    Too Busy For Yoga?

    “I am very busy!”
“I am very busy! I really want to but I do not have any time.”
“I am very busy! I also believe in yoga, but I do not have the time!”

If you are someone who catches herself saying one or more of the phrases above, it is time to take a serious look at the word “busy”.

Busy is synonymous with “occupied,” “engaged,” “involved,” “hard-pressed,” “swamped,” “absorbed,” “engrossed,” and ‘pre-occupied”.

We all have the same number of hours during the day. We all have family, chores at home, a work schedule and downtime. Each one of us fills our hours the way we deem fit. The way we choose to spend our time goes hand in hand with what we believe in, our life philosophies and principles.

Ask yourself what do you become “busy” with when you are not “working”:

    • Do I spend time being busy by chatting or texting with friends on the phone?
    • Do I spend time being busy by spending hours shopping?
    • Do I spend time being busy by going to eat out?
    • Do I spend time being busy first planning and packing for vacation and then becoming super busy going around with no time to sit?

The truth is that we are super “busy” with things we really want to spend time in, consciously or sub-consciously,” things that gives us pleasure, and so every minute of the day is taken up with what we really want to do!

The real question is: WHAT are we “busy” with that we do not have the time to stay healthy!

And then the question is: Do I really believe that I should exercise in order to stay healthy? Or does it become secondary to everything else I spend time on?
Therein lies the answer to “I do not have time for yoga!”

For many this questions hits them into awareness when they start facing a physical issue that refuses to resolve itself or are so stressed mentally that they become overwhelmed with life itself!

There is a solution to “I am too busy!” for anything that you should do and are unable to do.
    Question your priorities.
    Question your philosophies.
Question the reason you are truly avoiding doing what you need to do.
Question the urgency of why you should do what you have been avoiding.

If you are still avoiding what you need to do, it is because you do not truly believe that you need to do it! Someday, the situation will become urgent and you will be forced into it. Hopefully it will not be too late!

    PREVENTION is better than CURE.
If you believe that, you will create a shift in your consciousness and plunge into doing what needs to be done. You will like spending time on it. You will create time for it, one way or another.

    An example:
I believed that I do not need to do any other exercise since I was running after my kids, working hard in the corporate world and managing a home as well. That I believed was plenty of exercise!
The day my awareness shifted, my life changed – I became a yoga instructor, where I had no choice but exercise.

    Another example:
I do not like the paper work involved getting ready for taxes!
So I used to become super busy doing everything else that I believed needed my attention and avoid it until there was no choice left but do it in order to meet the deadline!
With a conscious shift in my way of thinking, attitude and behavior, I learned that I need to plunge into what I need to do the most and much before deadline. It has made my life stress free.

Know that as important as it is to work your work it is also important to work your health. Become super busy at being healthy. Join yoga or any other health exercise regime that suits your interest.

    What are you waiting for?

  • Blessed At Wellness Haven Yoga

    Blessed At Wellness Haven Yoga

    Blessed

At Wellness Haven Yoga School we are very blessed to have the most positive, joyful, progressive, compassionate and kind people who come to us and become a part of our amazing community, a family of people who care and share and learn and progress together.

This is only because we encourage and support such holistic behavior, for we truly follow the 8 limbs of yoga.  We are not just any yoga studio where one comes in for exercise and goes. We are a FAMILY. We have similar life philosophies, same wholesome attitudes.

This is very beautifully expressed in the quote by Will Smith:
“Don’t chase people. Be yourself, do your own thing, and work hard. The right people -the ones who really belong in your life-will come to you. And stay. ”

  • A Healthier Lifestyle

    A Healthier Lifestyle

    A Healthier Lifestyle

A key aspect of any nutrition program should be to keep one healthy and not starving or depleted or in misery!

At Wellness Haven we believe in gradually changing our lifestyle so that we are on a healthy path. We do not believe in yo-yo behavior patterns that actually destroy the lifestyle for the worse and not better.

We also believe that “losing body weight” is simply a byproduct of changing to a healthy lifestyle and is not the soul purpose of the program. Over the long run changes in eating habits is what makes the most difference. Our students realize this, experience this and tell us that they feel lighter in both body and mind, that they have to change over to smaller size clothes, their yoga forms have improved, their families are eating healthier, many physical issues have disappeared, no more acidity or heart burns or feelings of being bloated, no more headaches, change to positive and healthy thinking, and in general are much more joyful.

We believe that all three aspects of life need to come together for a joyful and peaceful human: PHYSICAL aspects through yoga asanas and nutrition and MENTAL and SPIRITUAL aspects through Breathing and Meditation practices.

What else can you ask for?

Get back on the healthy life track today for life is meant to be lived peacefully and joyfully. For those who are always concerned about the financial investment in your own body pay attention to:
    1. How ill the body feels when hit because of bad health
    2. How money flows out with hospital visits in spite of health insurance
    3. How the quality of your life suffers whenever in pain
    and
    4. How much money you spend for a few hours or a few days of pleasure when you eat out or buy materials or fly out for vacations.

We all need to fix our perceptions for therein lies the key to health.

  • Modern Yoga VS Authentic Indian Yoga

Modern Yoga VS Authentic Indian Yoga

Modern Yoga VS Authentic Indian Yoga

Finding Life’s Meaning Through The World Of Yoga

The word “Yoga” in Sanskrit (the language of ancient India – where yoga originated) is defined as “UNION.” Yoga is the true union of mind, body and spirit. . The critical aspect of yoga is to bring ones attention inwards (the spiritual aspect of yoga) – which is critical to one’s well-being and the foundation for a healthy and wholesome life.

In the modern world and in today’s language, the word yoga is commonly used to describe the physical postures or poses (Sanskrit word “asana”), but posture or asana is only one of the eight limbs of yoga as stated in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

    1. Yama: The 1st limb constitutes the 5 ethical guidelines for moral behavior towards others.
    Ahimsa: Nonviolence
    Satya: Truthfulness
    Asteya: Non stealing
    Brahmacharya: Non-lust
    Aparigraha: Non-covetousness
    2. Niyama: The 2nd limb constitutes the 5 guidelines for moral behavior towards oneself:
    Saucha: Cleanliness
    Santosa: Contentment
    Tapas: Sustained practice
    Svadhaya: Self Study
    Isvara pranidhana: Surrender to God
    3. Asana: The 3rd limb is the practice of yoga postures or asanas.
    4. Pranayama: The 4th limb is the practice of controlled breathing exercises.
    5. Pratyahara: The 5th limb is the practice of withdrawal of the senses, the practice of going inwards.
    6. Dharana: The 6th limb is the practice of concentration, the ability to focus without distractions from the outside world.
    7. Dhyana: The 7th limb is the practice of meditation. Meditation is a holistic discipline through which the practitioner attempts to get beyond the reflexive, “thinking” mind into a deeper state awareness.
    8. Samadhi: The 8th limb of yoga is the state of bliss, the enlightened state, where the Self transcends through meditation.

Those who have gone deeper into the world of yoga through all its limbs have found solace. They have understood what it means to have a yogic life and are gradually making yoga in all its glory a part of their life.

There are very few places that yoga is taught authentically and from every aspect – where the philosophies and the principles are brought right into the practice itself, where the instructor spends time in discussing and incorporating the critical aspects of life. These seem to be reserved for Yoga Teacher Training only and even then all aspects may not be covered. The modern world sees yoga as an asana practice only, which again is just one limb out of the 8 limbs of yoga. Yoga means to be wholesome. A yogin is someone who strives to cultivate all aspects of being a wholesome human.

Here is an excerpt from the wikipedia about asanas, that throws light on the real meaning of a yoga practice, which in the modern world has become nothing more than an exercise routine:

“Asana (/ˈɑːsənə/; About this sound listen (help•info) Sanskrit: आसन āsana [ˈɑːsənə] ‘sitting down’, < आस ās ‘to sit down’) is a body position, typically associated with the practice of Yoga, originally identified as a mastery of sitting still. In the context of Yoga practice, asana refers to two things: the place where a practitioner (or yogin, in general usage), yogi (male), or yogini (female) sits and the manner (posture) in which he/she sits In the Yoga sutras, Patanjali suggests that asana is “to be seated in a position that is firm, but relaxed” for extended, or timeless periods.

As a repertoire of postures were promoted to exercise the body-mind over the centuries to the present day, when yoga is sought as a primarily physical exercise form, modern usage has come to include variations from lying on the back and standing on the head, to a variety of other positions. However, in the Yoga sutras, Patanjali mentions the execution of sitting with a steadfast mind for extended periods as the third of the eight limbs of Classical or Raja yoga,[6] but does not reference standing postures or kriyās. Yoga practitioners (even those who are adepts at various complex postures) who seek the “simple” practice of chair-less sitting generally find it impossible or surprisingly grueling to sit still for the traditional minimum of one hour (as still practiced in eastern Vipassana), some of them then dedicating their practice to sitting asana and the sensations and mind-states that arise and evaporate in extended sits.

Asana later became a term for various postures useful for restoring and maintaining a practitioner’s well-being and improving the body’s flexibility and vitality, with the goal of cultivating the ability to remain in seated meditation for extended periods. Asanas are widely known as “Yoga postures” or “Yoga positions”. “Asana” quite simply means “a posture”. Any way that we may sit, stand or position our hands is an asana. Therefore, many asanas are possible. However, a particular posture that leads you to a higher possibility is called a yogasana.

Yoga in the West is commonly practiced as physical exercise or alternative medicine, rather than as the spiritual self-mastery meditation skill it is more associated with in the East.”

The modern world is about instant gratification, whining, complaining, showing anger, back-biting, writing nasty comments originating from their own angry minds without a sound perspective, threatening, jumping to baseless conclusions, making false assumptions and without any sense of remorse, eating whatever comes their way, indulging in mindless activities, wasting time and money on things that do not matter, instead of reaching the depths of their own being where peace, joy and wisdom resides, and yet such people want to call themselves “yogi” and “yoginis”.

The real yoga is who you are inside and not what you have accumulated in the external world. It is a journey to an enlightened state of being.

A healthy, strong, flexible and balanced mind leads to a healthy, strong, flexible and balanced body. Without developing awareness, without the practice of meditation and breathing, which leads to such a healthy state, there is no yoga.

It all begins with planting of the right seed of awareness. We are in yoga 24X7, for it is how we conduct our life. ~ Umang Goel
