    I Want To Lose Weight!

    “Dear Umang,
    This is my journey. I am a diabetic who had high cholesterol.
    I started Umang’s Wellness Haven Yoga middle of September, 2014. I had mentioned to my husband that I wanted to join a yoga studio because I disliked going to the gym; it was so impersonal – I was one of seventy students in the yoga class. People lined up, attended and then left!
    My husband found Umang’s Wellness Haven. I came for 2 weeks. I felt I found my place. Umang makes us feel like home. It is most welcoming and nurturing haven.
    After a month of Umang’s Yoga, I wanted to try her Nutrition program and Meditation and Breathing. Even though I paid for everything because I had bought her 3 months unlimited package with all her programs (yoga, Breathing, Meditation and Nutrition), I kept putting off the nutrition. Umang had said it was alright, I will start when I was ready. I finally started January 12, 2015.
    After completing the 12 week plan, my diabetic hemoglobin A1C was 5.8, it was 11 before. My cholesterol used to be 210 and had dropped 102 points to 108. My endocrinologist was shocked and I told her how I did it with Umang’s help.
    I have lost over 25 pounds since I joined Umang’s Wellness Haven. I haven’t weighed this in over 32 years since my youngest was born! My body fat went down 5% (41 to 36). I have lost 1.4″ in my upper arms (13.5 to 12.1), 3″ in my waist (38.5 to 35.5), 2.2″ in my hips (43.4 to 41.2), 2.8″ in my thighs (22 to 19.2), .5″ in my calves (14.5 to 14). In September I was a size 14. Now I am size 8. This has surpassed all my expectations! I feel wonderful and happy. That is all I can ask for.

    Detox

    There are many who know the word “DETOX” but remain unaware of exactly what it is!

    Every so often (I hope it is infrequent for most!), we take in heavy food for pleasure.
    And in order to get back our body at the optimal functioning level again, we need to get the body back on track.

    How many times per year do we detox?
    We prefer once a quarter.
    We simply make a conscious decision to upgrade our eating patterns, from the day to day habits- mostly good habits, which may have derailed on birthdays, anniversaries, parties and vacations. Since we keep a generally healthy lifestyle (Wellness Haven Students do as they are educated on awareness primarily) quarterly cleanups are all we need to continue to do and is not a major upheaval for us.

    By detoxing once per quarter, we are able to get rid of the toxins from our system, which the modern food industry encourages us to do! This detox enables a more alkaline internal environment, so needed for a clean and healthy internal environment and a life full of happy energy.

    To maintain our external organ – the skin- and the internal organs – lungs, kidneys and bowels, we keep them functioning without overload from the acid buildup through unhealthy eating. This acid buildup is also known as “acidosis” and is why we may run
    into critical health issues, disease and sickness.
    Food can be categorized into:
    Dead food: meat, poultry and dairy
    Processed food: externally manufactured and packaged food
    Healthy food: natural food
    It is the dead and processed food that creates toxicity, acidity and system overload preventing the system to absorb healthy nutrients and leading to illness, fatigue, constipation, lethargy, headaches, bloating and so many other body issues that an average human being remains unaware of and wonder “why I don’t feel good”.
    In order to maintain a happy, healthy alkaline -acidic balance, so that our system functions optimally, we need to clean or detox our system on a regular basis.
    At Wellness Haven, we not only teach you how to clean the system every quarter but we also teach you simple methods to maintain yourself throughout as well as how to take
    U-Turns when it comes to friends, paties and vacations! How? We are with you throughout the program and even after- as long as you want us at no extra charge!
    Anyone can start anytime for we spend time with you 1 on 1. In addition, we also let you join either an ongoing group or a newly starting group, for we do this on an ongoing basis. How you want to do this is entirely up to you with our expert help. Whether you do it remotely or locally is also up to you for we have tools to guide you no matter where you live.
    All we need is total commitment from you to yourself, to lead a disease free life.

    Self Healing

    Our bodies are designed to self-heal without too much of outside interference, with proper nutrition, with exercising our limbs, and with keeping our innermost self joyful.

    In this modern day and age though, most are in a rat race. Where they are going, even they do not know! There is no defined path to fulfill the Higher Purpose in life for they have not stopped long enough to understand why they were given this gift of life on our mother earth. And no wonder, the modern human is suffering from depression, anxiety, and are emotionally unfulfilled which manifest in innumerable physical health issues driving them to medical facilities and doctors who prescribe pain killers and chemical treatments without looking deeper into the emotional aspect of the issue at hand.

    If people stopped to analyse the reason behind the many health issues, they would find that one of the most simple solutions to many health issues is to look at the events and people in ones life that may be the source of problems, and that removal of all forms of toxins would be the first step towards physical health.

    We are human beings. Our bodies degrade as we age, and that is a fact! We cannot deny aging.

    But what we CAN DO and what IS IN OUR HANDS:

    • With consistent Gentle Yoga Practice, you will progress towards more Intense Yoga Asanas to build your core, strength and flexibility even further. Intense Yoga will also becomes Aerobic in nature taking care of the need for increasing your heart rate during yoga asanas.
    • As you are healing your body through streching, strengthening, balancing, Heal it Nutritionally as well so that the fuel required for the body’s healthy growth is coming from the right sources.
    • With Physical Healing also pay attention to Emotional, Mental, Spiritual Healing as well through Meditation and Breathing Exercises or Pranayama.
    • When you are emotionally, mentally, spiritually and physically healthy, you are ready to heal every other aspect of your life and including Financial Health by upgrading your Money Concepts. Yes you can Reclaim Your Happiness.

    Do not procrastinate on your HEALTH & HAPPINESS. Time is NOW, not tomorrow.

    You are under stress if you are not in your naturally joyful state of being.

    There are many underlying factors causing stress in ones life, but every factor is a result of the 3 critical factors mentioned below:

    • Relationship: You are in an uncomfortable relationship with a significant other or a family member or a friend or with someone related to your work. Yoiu want to be in control of the situation but you are not. This is damaging to your emotional health.
    • Money: Your finances are keeping you worried. You are living from paycheck to paycheck.
    • Health: You are not in a healthy state of being. You have physical health related issues. You are unable to manage your Eating Habits.

    If you are under duress due to any one of the above, you are STRESSED!

    So how do you keep your stress under control?

    In general people think:
    -if they ignore or avoid the stress factor, they will be able to manage their stress – ignoring or avoiding never helps. We need to face our situation boldly and manage the stress factor with result based action steps.
    – if they exercise, they will be able to manage their stress – exercise always helps by producing happy hormones in the body but is temporary for as long as you exercise you are good; you leave it and you are back to square one! So Exercise daily!
    – if they sit and meditate, they will be able to manage their stress – it relaxes and calms the mind but is temporary for it lasts as long as you have calmed your thoughts! So Meditate daily!

    Effective stress management is a skill and an art that is learned through AWARENESS – which comes through education of the mind; through exercises like meditation, breathing techniques and visualization which are simply tools to develop awareness of your authentic Self so that there can be a change in attitude and perceptions, a change in ones belief system, that is transformation in the way you think and act!  With changed perceptions and better habits, every aspect of your life improves: relationships, finances, and health.

    Such education is even more important than the academics through school and college. It comes with learning life skills – proper learning of life changing tools, with practice, with patience, but when learned you are able to manage your stress in such a way that joy surfaces at all times no matter what is going on in your life!

    Special Self Care Ritual

    Rituals are mindful, creative set of action steps with a purpose that provide us with meaning in our lives by driving our focused attention to a set of actions that are mentally, emotionally and physically satisfying and produce beneficial results. Due to complete clarity in every step of the ritual, it has tremendous impact on our psyche, behavior patterns and our thought process. It provides us with a sense being connected to the world round us, a sense of belonging and as a result provides security, comfort and warmth. It empowers us to connect with our Higher Self. It is a celebration of life itself for it allows us to see beauty and harmony all around us.

    Here is one such special self care nightly ritual that provides us with not only comfort but restful sleep.

    After taking care of the activities for the day, take a few minutes of your time for yourself, just for you. Make a little ‘nurturing basket’ for yourself with a soft towel, your favorite lotion or oil, your favorite soft socks.

    Before going to bed dip your feet in a warm bucket of water and let them soak for just a minute or two. Rinse them clean. In the process your hands are also soaked. Wipe them lovingly with your soft towel. Then spend another minute or two massaging the soles of your feet and your hands with your favorite lotion or oil going in and out though the spaces in between the toes, and the fingers.  Don your soft socks.

    Take yourself to bed and indulge in a loving rinsing gentle yogic twist of the body to release all the tensions.

    Close your eyes and indulge in a silent prayer in gratitude. With a smile allow yourself to be taken to the land of dreams…

    This special nightly ritual will go a long way towards a calmer and stress free life.

    Yoga And Weight Management

    Whoever has heard of yoga is also very well aware of its mental benefits. It is very well recognized as a stress-releaser, and its calming effects. It is also widely known for its ability to increase flexibility, balance and stamina through the beautiful yoga asanas, but only the regularly practicing yogins are aware of its ability as a strengthening exercise and even less are aware of its ability as a cardiovascular and  weight management tool.

    Many people who are involved in other form of sports like running, martial arts, and those who love different forms of dancing like ballet, or Indian dances and including Bollywood style dancing, as well as gym visitors have realized that none of these activities are complete on their own. They get strengthening and stamina building through these but they remain very tight in their bodies due to stiff muscles.

    Yoga on the other hand, when fully experienced, is complete on its own for its benefits are mental, emotional, spiritual as well as physical. It increases flexibility and balance as well as provides strengthening and cardiovascular benefits and is an effective weight management tool.

    What do we mean by “fully experienced?”

    Those who are beginners in yoga practice or have never exercised before other than some walking have to start with gentler yoga exercises. This means that even though they are working towards all aspects of the yoga benefits – stress releasing, calming, balancing, flexibility enhancing and strength building – they may not experience the full range of cardiovascular benefits for it takes a seasoned yogin to experience yoga in its full glory through asanas that need to be worked on and practiced daily with focus on alignment and form. Once the basics are understood and students have built stamina to practice more energetic asanas that work up the heart rate, like the Sun Salutation Sequence, as well as the weight bearing asanas like the Arm Balances, the Pigeon Sequence or the Warrior Sequence and such, yogins start experiencing the cardiovascular benefits of yoga at a level that becomes very effective in re-shaping the body through toning, as well as calorie and fat burning. This when combined with yogic props make yoga the only exercise that is complete on its own.

    As with anything else in life effectiveness comes with time, practice and patience.

    Start with Gentle Yoga and gradually build up to the full form of yoga and experience health benefits like never before.

    Gentle Yoga is a modified version of yoga to suit people with different physical abilities and is very effective with those with physical limitations, including those with physical disability, senior citizens who have not done yoga before or those who have never exercised. This is because Gentle Yoga uses props like the chair for back support, which is not used in regular flow yoga classes. The wall provides the stability and balance for standing poses. Students from this class walk with better posture, better stability and balance and with greater confidence. It benefits those with physical issues like osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, back and neck pain, and sciatica. It is effective in lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride to optimal levels.

    Energetic Yoga is the more strenuous version of yoga simply because we do many flow sequences away from the chair and the wall. Studies have shown similar fitness results for blood pressure and heart rate  for those practicing yoga versus aerobic exercises – average blood pressure for practicing yogins was 108/65 compared to 115/71 for those doing aerobic exercises, and the heart rate for practicing yogins  averaged 63 beats per minute, compared to versus 60 beats per minute for those doing aerobic exercises. But flexibility benefits are only realized through yoga stretches.

    No matter which type of exercise you like and which type of sports you love, supplement it with yoga asanas in its full glory and reap health benefits that keep you rejuvenated in both mind and body.
